Our Approach

You suspect you might be ready. You just haven’t had someone show you clearly that you are.

The Work-Optional Blueprint is a comprehensive, integrated financial plan designed around one question: what does it actually take to make work optional for you — and keep it that way?

We believe the financial plan should reflect the life you’re designing, not the other way around. That’s why we start every engagement by understanding not just your balance sheet, but your goals, your timeline, and what a great second half actually looks like for you — so the Blueprint we build is specific to your life.

As a fee-only firm, we don’t earn commissions or referral fees — your fee is our only compensation. We serve as fiduciaries at all times.

The Work-Optional Blueprint™

Three steps. One integrated plan.

The Blueprint isn’t a one-time document. It’s a living plan we build together and revisit as your life changes — because a work-optional life doesn’t stay static, and neither should the plan behind it.

Step 01

Your Discovery Meeting

We get to know what matters most to you — your goals, your timeline, and what work-optional actually means in your life. We do a thorough review of your full financial picture: accounts, income, spending, existing plans, and tax situation. You’ll leave with a clear sense of what we know, what needs attention, and where the opportunities are.

Step 02

Your Work-Optional Blueprint

We present your personalized financial plan — along with scenarios that show what different futures look like and the choices that determine which one is achievable. We walk through income strategy, tax planning, and estate planning concepts together. You’ll leave with a clear, integrated plan you understand and have helped shape.

Step 03

Your Blueprint in Motion

We present the investment strategy designed to bring your Blueprint to life. This isn’t a standalone portfolio recommendation — it’s the mechanism that ties your income needs, tax strategy, and long-term goals together into a coordinated plan. You leave with a complete, integrated plan — and the confidence to move forward.

The six financial pillars

What’s inside the Blueprint.

Retirement planning done well isn’t six separate conversations. It’s one integrated plan where every pillar informs the others.

Income architecture

A coordinated income system from Social Security, investment withdrawals, any pensions or other sources, sequenced to minimize taxes and support your goals.

Tax efficiency

Roth conversions, bracket management, required minimum distributions, and capital gains planning can significantly extend how long your money lasts.

Longevity planning

A couple retiring at 62 has a reasonable probability that one of them lives past 90. We plan for sequence-of-returns risk, inflation, and sustainable withdrawal rates from day one.

Healthcare & long-term care

Bridging to Medicare, supplemental coverage, and long-term care strategy deserve serious attention before you need them. We build this into every Blueprint.

Investment strategy

The strategy you need when growing wealth and the strategy you need when drawing from it are fundamentally different. We also employ asset location strategies typically available only to much larger portfolios.

Estate & legacy planning

Beneficiary designations, trust considerations, and charitable intentions. Birch Point does not provide legal advice; we work alongside your estate attorney to ensure plans are coordinated.

Planning for the whole picture

The financial plan should fit the life you’re building.

The financial plan is the foundation. But a work-optional life well-lived also depends on how you’re spending your time, who you’re spending it with, and whether you’ve thought through what you’re stepping into — not just what you’re stepping away from.

Birch Point’s planning process starts by understanding your full picture, so the plan we build is designed to support the life you’re actually describing. That means our Discovery Meeting goes beyond the balance sheet — we ask about your goals, your vision for the next chapter, and the things that matter most to you.

The ongoing relationship

What working together looks like after the Blueprint.

Regular planning meetings

At least annually for a comprehensive review — and more often when circumstances call for it.

Access when you need it

When a question comes up, we’re available. You don’t have to wait for a scheduled meeting to get a thoughtful answer.

A plan that evolves

Your Blueprint isn’t a static document. As your situation changes, we update the plan so it remains accurate and useful.

Coordination with your other advisers

We work alongside your CPA, estate attorney, and other professionals. When it’s helpful, we’ll facilitate those conversations directly.

Life transitions, supported

Retirement, a significant inheritance, the loss of a spouse — we’ve navigated these situations with clients before and know how to help.

Keeping your plan current

We monitor for planning opportunities and bring relevant items to your attention. Many require coordination with you or your CPA, and we’ll make sure you have what you need to act with confidence.
